Show LOWER VOTER TURNOUTS: A LEAGUE CONCERN? The League has traditionally been concerned with encouraging citizens to vote as an elementary step in citizen participation. A recent artide in The New Vert Times points out that our challenges in encouraging that frst step m-e enormous. In the last Presidential Election, only 53% of the voting age population voted for president. Only 16% of 18 to 24 year olds bother to vote. Surveys by research goups are finding a link between the decline in voting and the decline in civic involvement. According to Dr. Curtis B. Gans, Director of the Committee for the Study of the Electorate, NThose who do not vote tend not to participate in any other form of political, civic, religious and social activity." The Times article notes that," ... it is hard to escape the idea that the first generation raised with television is a generation that participates less in the democracy than any before it. Politics through the camera eye is not so much a debate about the future as it is a spectacle of gladiators." These comments are thought provoking as the League gears up for another voter service year. FROMTHEB>ITOR: Salt Lake City vill be hosting the U.S. Conference of Mayors on June 10-15, 1988.
