Show SA.~PLE LETTER-TO-THE-EDITOR The League of Women Voters recently completed a two-year nationwide survey that provides fresh and disturbing evidence that many poor people in the United States are unable to meet their basic human needs of housing, health care, nutrition and adequate income. The League's study also reveals serious gaps in our nation's welfare system. The U.S. Congress has recognized this crisis and has introduced legislation to address the problems of the current welfare system. In December of last year, the House of Representatives approved R.R. 1720. The League lobbied actively for the House bill and believes it is a significant step toward genuine welfare reform. However, the bill's counterpart in the Senate, the Family Security Act, (S. 1511) has a number of provisions that deeply concern the League. If changes are not made to the Senate bill, many poor people could end up in a situation worse than their current one. The League believes that S. 1511 must be strengthened to guarantee a range of meaningful education, employment and job training opportunities and provide child care for all participants in these programs. A waiver provision in the bill that would allow as many as ten states to do away with basic welfare programs that serve poor Americans should be eliminated. Furthermore, S. 1511 should ensure sufficient transitional support services such as child care and Medicaid coverage for those recipients moving into the work force. Finally, the League maintains that Senators must see that adequate funding is provided for this program. As there are many Americans who are currently in need of federal support, we must ensure that bills affecting their daily lives are consistent, comprehensive, and fair. CONGRATULATIONS I!
