Show PRESIDE NT'S LETTER JULY 1988 Sixteen-hour days for five days in a row, dynamic speakers, workshops to inspire, encourage and inform, that is just part of what makes a LWV National Convention. From early morning to late at night, it is marathon stimulation. There are no dull moments, and best of all was networking with so many energetic, motivated people. I came back bursting with ideas and a "nothing ventured, nothing gained" attitude, along with the courage to fail, if necessary. The downtown area of Denver was the setting for this activity. It has been renovated in the past several years into a beautiful, easy to travel, fun to shop, historically interesting place. We found fun restaurants that served great food. While sitting at convention, I kept corning back in my mind to our own local League problems of trying to maintain and grow in numbers both member-wise and money-wise. I decided we needed to be more realistic about who we are and what we stand for in our community. We have for years tried to appeal to the minority and low income, and we have failed in most cases. Why? Are we too expensive? We cut our dues for those who need dues to be less and we still have very few, if any, members in this category. What about the option of appealing to those who have more of an interest in what our goals are? What about all the go-getters who think we have similar requirements to the Junior League. Maybe that is a direction in which to go. What about all those friends and relatives who have heard you talk about the LWV for years? Have you ever asked them to join? If they said no, is it possible they may have changed their minds? Let us search high, not just low, for new members. This Presidential election year is a great opportunity to find out who is interested in government and who is not. Thanks need to be made to our loyal members who have the time and energy that it takes to keep the LWV's reputation alive and well. One such member is JANE HOLT. She has had the tremendous responsibility of being the VOTER editor. She is going on to do other things in her life. We hope to see her again in the not too distant future. Our new VOTER editor is MARVA WIMMER. She is brand new to the LWV, but has done great things with other organizations, namely, the Rape Crisis Center. Madge Fairbanks was to be VOTER editor, but she has so many great Voter Service ideas I asked her to be Action Chairperson. Our big project of the summer is a fund raising party at the MELLING'S. Please see the VOTER article and invitation for the where and when details. National Convention has voted to raise PMP (Per Member Payment). So, since it is not in the budget we adopted last spring, we need to raise the money somehow. I hope you can squeeze your budget enough to allow a $25.00 per person donation. It is to be a swim and dine party at NANCY and GEORGE'S new house. Please bring your friends and family, or even your enemies, if they will help us raise some money. We are inviting people we have known through the years as supporters, co-workers, past Leaguers, long-time Leaguers and brand new ones. Please think of people you would like us to invite. Call Sandy in the office and arrange to pick up some invitations to send with your own personal touch of a handwritten note and maybe a follow-up phone call. SKA.RON Salt Lake Voter -1- July 1988 |
