Show GOOD NEWS ONPAC LEGISLATION MOVING? SPRING CLEANING! er JUST CLEAR.ING OUTt A fairly good bill, actively supported by the League, was passed during the year's Legislative session to require political action committees ( PACs) and all other g-oups or entities that collect or make political contributions to register their identity and report their political financial action. The bill was a long time in coming. Last year. a bill was proposed by the Lt. Governor's office requiring PA Cs to disclose, but exempting businesses and corporations, which are not required to form PACs in order to make political contributions and don't usually do so. The League opposed this because it .was unbalanced and unfair in that approximately half of the political money given in Utah comes from business sources. If you are doing any of these things, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts wants your give-aways. They holding their semi-annual Treas.res and Trifles Sale this fall and desperately need items to sell. Anything from a-ystal chandeliers to used pancake turners is welcome - - jewelry. books, china, pots and pans, appliances or furniture. (No clothes please, unless it's a mink coat or some such.) Donations are tax deductible of course. and the Museum van will pick up any large items or boxes at your convenience. Just call 581-7049 to arrange a time, or ctop them off yourself at the Museum. A serious complication has been the fourth initiative on the tax petition being circulated for vote on the November ballot. Three of the initiatives deal with tax rollback: and reform: the fourth would have required the same PAC disclosure requirement as the Lt. Governor's bill, also exempting corporations and businesses from reporting. The question arose as to which would take precedence if the initiative were to be voted in; the new law passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor or the unbalanced iniative . proposal? We are pleased to be able to inf arm League members that Greg Beesley. who is in charge of the petition movement, says that in light of the new law now in place the PAC intiative on the petition will not be submitted. Mr. Beesley's g-oup will go along with the stronger, more balanced law. - Pat Brim NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Thank you to all the League members who have contributed information and articles to the VOTER.
