Show 1988 VOTER SERVICE ACTIVITIES , A video "commercial" was made with the help of the students and video instructor at Highland High. Sharon Walkington wrote the script, with the help of the Voter Service Committee. The students acted and the teacher videotaped the action and added music and titles to the three-minute program. Ralph Smart is the Audio/Visual instructor and his services were arranged for by the Principal, Don Barlow. We made the tape to be played at the schools on the closed circu it TV as an announcement that we were registering graduating seniors. All together, we registered 850 students in 12 high schools and Salt Lake Community College. Colleen Carnahan was the organizer of the LWV registration efforts. Nancy Melling. Lyla Fuller, Gigi Brandt, Lisa Manual, Sheryl Gillian, Sharon Walkington and Marva Wimmer helped with school registrations. The LWV registered voters at Valley Fair, Cottonwood, Fashion Place and ZCMI malls as well as drug/grocery stores, private companies and the Holiday Inns. The total number of registrations was 2,215. Colleen Carnahan and Lyla Fuller spearheaded this operation. They were aided by Sharon Walkington, Marva Wimmer, Janice Gygi, Pam Boede and a girl scout troop. Colleen registered more voters and went more places than any other Leaguer. A Candidates' Meeting was held at Whitmore Library on Oct. 6th. State and County candidates were invited to make statements and answer questions for the benefit of a nice showing of about 80 concerned voters. This meeting was organized by Genene Simpson, a new member. Helpers for the meeting were Sharon Walkington, Janice Gygi, Janet Hughes and Jan Givins. Radio and television appearances were made by many league members on subjects ranging from asking questions of candidates about the issues of national, state and local interest to answering questions about how the League goes about deciding what issues to study and act on. Pat Brim and Sharon Walkington bravely went on the air for an hour at the KTKK station. It went well, and we were pleased with the reception we received. Sharon Walkington went on KALL Radio. Colleen Carnahan and Gigi Brandt also did radio shows. Many Leaguers were asked to participate as an audience for a co-sponsored LWV of Utah Candidates' Debate on Channel 4 that was coordinated by Lee Brennan. Channel 13 asked the LWV to participate as panelists posing questions to the National and State Candidates. Sharon Walkington, Ann O'Connell, Jan Miller, Barbara Hartmann, Pat Brim, Sheryl Gillian and Bill Walsh were there representing Salt Lake LWV. Other LWV representatives were Lucy Valerio, Weber LWV, Meg Mayer, Bountiful, and Linda Clark, Utah County. The LWV taught classes in Bryant and Murray community schools this fall. The subject was the role of political parties in the election process. An effort was made to help the students decide for themselves who to vote for based on their own political philosophy. We talked about judging the candidates' literature and how to judge a debate. The classes were planned and executed by Sharon Walkington, Susan Barnhill and Marva Wimmer. A time consuming but important annual project for the LWV is coordinating the Voter's Guide which is published by the Salt Lake Tribune. This guide is a comparison of candidates' views on the same issues as asked by the LWV. Copies of the guide are distributed in the Salt Lake Tribune and by the LWV to libraries, both city and county, schools district offices, chambers of commerce, political party headquarters, and schools and colleges, as well as some private businesses. Colleen Carnahan coordinated the candidates responses. She says it took an average of seven phone calls per candidate to get a final answer. Lyla Fuller was the liaison with Doug Parker of the Salt Lake Tribune. She also distributed the guides in Nancy Bouttier's truck. The LWV office "womaned" two telephones for a short period before the primary and the general elections as well as registration day in the neighborhoods. The most common question was, "Where do I register?" or "Where do I vote?" On election day, the volunteers in the LWV office answered 492 phone calls, and the total for this period was close to 2,400 calls!! Sandy Peck, our office manager, and Jo Stottern, our phone coordinator, were supported by Marge Rosher, Colleen Carnahan, Marian Sullivan, Joan Auger, Lyla Fuller, Julie Bryant, Janice Gygi, Pat Eager, Ruth Holland, Judy Tukuafu, Jean Kelly, Carolyn Dunn, Jane Holt, Barbara Jensen, Glenda Peacock, Inga Laughlin, Kristin Gygi, Betty Madsen and Barbara Geer. We know we could have answered many more calls if we had been able to answer the phones for more hours of the day. Salt Lake Voter -1 - January 1989 |
