Show ttt PRESIDENT'S LETTER April 1988 This hes been a fabulous year for the Salt Lake L~ue financially, and I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to those members who have given so generously. The Annual Meeting Handbook will have a list of ell those who have contributed to the League, both members and non-members. For the past couple of years, the L~ue has been unable to pay in full its PMP ( per member payment) to the National L~ue. Thanks to the generous contributions of our membership, we have been able to pay our past debt and all of this year's payment. This year we can efford to send two votino delegates to the National Convention in Denver and still have a stab le financial base to begin the new year. There ere plans to put together a car-pool of interested members who might want the opportunity to see LWVUS in action. For those of us who have had this opportunity in the past, we would al 1agree that it has given us a sense of awe and commitment. One of the main reasons it's been difficult to make these payments is because our league has been supporting an office, and rent hes been our first priority. It isn't necessary to explain the multitude of benefits we receive because of this office. The extensive requests for voter registration information justifies the need to list our telephone number. The benefits from public exposure are great tools to advance our goal to educate and encourage the public's participation in the political process. Anyone who has ventured into the office or looked closely at the files can appre.ciete the fact that no one would want them in their home. The most important expense we have is the salary for our office mana;w3r, Sandy Peck, whose skills and resources give us the stability that makes our organization strong and viable. Thanks to your financial commitment and that of the community. we can now maintain our gxx1 financial standing with the nat1onal and state organizations and still maintain the office. We are learning how to use tax-doouctible oollers to pay for the educational services we offer the community. A portion of our office. staff, equipment, and phone is used for educational services, as well as our publications and Voter. B~use we have learned how to use taxdeductible dollars, we have been able to purchase a computer, which has streamlined our efficiency in administration and communication and allowed us more time for action and finance. It also hes made it easier for working women to hold positions on our board. As we expand our abilitiy to write grants, we will lessen the burden on dues to cover expenses and hopefully be ab le to expand our services to the community. I still want to encour~ our membership to oonate to the league. This year, over half the funds we raised came from the membership. I want to rem ind those members who can afford to give that we c.an use tax-deductible dollars and we appreciate them. However, if you want these oonetions to be tax-deductible, you must write your checks to LWVU Education Fund, earmarked for the Salt Lake League. In closing, I want to thank you all again for your support to the League. It is a vital organization that gives ten-fold to this community and to eoch of us. This year there is a pres1dent1al elect1on wh1ch trad1t1onally g1ves us 1ncreased pub11c exposure through debates and voter registration. If we can effectively take advantage of this, we can increase our membership and our financial stability. Our annual meeting 1s this month, and we would love to see you al 1come end let us s<1y thank you! We wtll be conducting business and, most importantly. we will be socielizating, making new friends, and reminding ourselves why we like the league so much! Nanette Salt Lake\·ot.er - - 1- April 1988 |
