Reservation s for lunch must be made by Tuesday, March 17, with Joyce Gorrell at 581-6627. The United Nations General Assembly has declared 1987 The International Veer of Shelter for the Homeless. It's immediate objective will be to secure measurable improvement in the shelters and neighborhoods of some of the poor, particularly in the developing countries in 1987, and long-term for all. by the year 2000. This Year provides an opportunity to re-appraise the role and contribution of shelters and services to economic development. The deveioping countries of the world are facing an urbanization explosion without paraliel. The industrialized countries also have fittle experience. so there are few guideines or rules of thumb to fall back on_ There is hectic, uncontrolled. perhaps uncontrollable, g-oVv'th in the towns and cities of developing nations. If the unptanned gowth continues, it will jeopardize not only their future economic development but may also undo whatever progess some of the countries have made so far. The article in the Development Forum. which is published by the United Nations Division of Economic and Social Information.goes on to say that in 1950 there were only 76 cities with a population of more than one million. In 2000 A.D. there are likely to be 440 such cities with 284 in developing countries. Most oi the people ctawn to the cities come hoping to find jobs and a better life. However, atter facing a host of obstacles. they often gravitate to squatter colonies where they build some form of temporary shelter. tn these teeming, mushrooming squatter colonies is e. growing generation of city dwellers that has no stake in the present social order. They hold the present social structure responsible for their deg-aded lives and some have iearned to live by preying upon it. -Deanna Clark International Relations Chair Senate Bill 228 mandates concurrent enrollment, a program which allows high school students to earn college credit in high school, in Utah by 1989. This program should illuminate some of the issues to be resolved in designing Utah's program.
