Show 3654 Cotton- D 1676 A They came in to Gallup or Manulite first, twenty- two miles west of Gallup; we got our supplies from there; after being there ten years I went to Gallup and established a wholesale house there and put in supplies and furnished the people that lived on the reservation. Q During the time you were with the Navajos down there immediately after you established this trading post -- A That trading post was not established by me. You asked me when it was established. I went in there in 1885. Q Did the Navajo Indians at that time, to your knowledge, possess or own any boats? A No sir. I never heard of a boat -- the only boat I ever heard of. I heard them talk about a boat at Lees Ferry, or the ferry across Lees Ferry. MR. FARNSWORTH: I take it the witness testimony will be interpreted to mean he does not personally know about any boats. THE WITNESS: No; that is what I tried to explain. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Mr. Cotton, how intimately did you know the Navajo Indians? A Well, I traded with them; just like you would know anybody you traded with, that's about all. Q Did you know their chiefs? A Yes sir |
