A Yes, he had gone out on the Kaibab to explore, get a view of the river from the north rim on Kaibab. Q Did Major Powell bring in some supplies? A Yes, we had supplies for our trip through the Grand Canyon, our contemplated trip through the canyon. Q Where were those supplies brought from? A From Kanab in wagons; by that time they had a wagon road in there. Q A wagon road from where? A Wagon trail, rather, from Kanab to Lee's Ferry. Q Were those supplies brough from Salt Lake City, do you know? A Yes. Q And came in overland? A They came overland from Salt Lake City. Q What did you do during the winter of 1872 and 1873? A Part of the winter, the autumn of 1872 was spent in additional topography work. Then in December, about December, we went to Kanab and put up some large tents there; in one of those tents we drafted the map which I spoke of taking to Salt Lake City afterwards; I carried that to Salt Lake City in February of 1873. Q Will you please describe that trip from Kanab up to Salt Lake City, as to the character of the country which you passed through? |
