Show 1528 3506 17 Dellenbaugh- D Q Will you describe the progress of the expedition from the end of Stillwater canyon to the head of the cataracts, or the head of Cataract canyon? A Stillwater, as I said, was comparatively free from obstructions; Labyrinth was full of sandbars, but Stillwater was still narrower, and the water was confined so we had no trouble in Stillwater from grounding. Q I am moving on from that point down to the head of the cataracts. A That takes us to the head of Cataract. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Do you know whether this was low water or high water period? A It was sort of a medium stage of water at that time; might be called rather under the medium stage. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q In that stretch of the river from the mouth of the San Rafael down to the cataracts did you meet any other boats or any other people? A No. Q Did you have any difficulty in there with the water on account of rain storms? A We had some heavy rainstorms; they caused the river to vary slightly; the water came over in cataracts all the way along, in places, during rainstorms; just below the San Rafael we had some very heavy rainstorms, and the cascades were very numerous; must have been hundreds of them falling into the river; some would fall fifty feet, some would fall eight hundred or nine |
