A The way we went through there, we would come to a rapid, we would walk along the bank, look it over and spot the rocks in there that we could, and pick out the channel as near as we could from the shore. Then one boat would go through, and if he went through the channel that we had spotted all right, then the other boats would follow through the same channel. There was two boats going through Cataract canyon that struck rocks and were slightly damaged, so that they had to be repaired; and there was one rapid known as Dark Canyon rapid, on the lower end of the cataract, we had to portage our cargo around the rapid and line our boats part way through, and then shot the remainder of the rapid.
