A There was a road there in 1880, put in from White canyon that came in near where this road now is, came around the head of Grand gulch, struck the Comb wash about twelve miles above the river, went to the river and on to Bluff, cutting through the cliff; but that is impassable, has been for thirty- five years. Q What trails are there in the same territory that lead to any of the rivers? A There is a trail goes from Marsh pass, crosses at Recompense placer mines, the Clay Hill crossing, and on to Elk mountains; from that you can get down to Hall crossing, Hole- in- the- Wall or Hite on the Colorado. There in another trail crosses about three miles up from the mouth of the San Juan, crosses over to the Hole- in-the- Wall about three or four miles up the Colorado from the mouth of the San Juan and into Escalante. There is another trail crosses at the mouth of Piute and out over the Grey mesa and covers the Hall crossing and the Hole- in- the- Wall. The Recompense trail covers all three points, the Hole- in- the- Wall, Hall's crossing, and Hite. There is another crossing at Goodrich, where the road crosses there, that cuts out through the rough country, |
