Show 3569 1591 80 Dellenbaugh Q Why did you do that? A Because we were short of rations, and we couldn't stop long enough to make investigations, and the photographs which we intended to make, so we left that boat for the following year. Q Did you leave the men with the boats? A No, we hid the boat up under some rocks, filled it with sand. Q Under some rocks on the bed of the river? A Way up; we hauled it up. Q Up the Freemont river? A Up on the cliffs; we hauled it up there and put it under a big rock; must have been fifty feet above the river. Q Was that the boat holding three or four men? A They all held the same number of men. Q Then when you went down through Glen canyon and on to Lee's Ferry, the other two boats were more heavily loaded than they had been in the upper part of the journey; is that so? A From Lee's Ferry down? Q No, from Freemont river down. A Yes, they were. Q I am speaking now of the first trip that you left the boat. You must have taken the supplies and men out of that boat? A We did. Q And put them into the other two? A Put them into the other two, that is right. |
