A It varies; in Glen canyon the country of both sides of the canyon is barren, absolutely barren for miles an miles; in Cataract canyon it is also barren, but more rugged; in fact, along on the canyon the immediate region is very rugged and barren except on the Kaibab, where they have a beautiful forest; that is high; wherever the country is below an altitude of about four thousand feet, or even three thousand feet, it is extremely barren. Is that practically the character of the country from Gunnison crossing clear down to Lee's Ferry? A Yes. Q Did you observe the vegetation? A Yes; there is no vegetation along Glen canyon whatever; the entire length of the canyon back for miles on each side, the only vegetation is a few bunches of grass in some little hollow where the sand accumulates. That rock is very friable, soft rock; every time there is a rainstorm the surface is washed off, so nothing can grow there, any more than on the roof of a house.
