Q What about lining the boats? Was it necessary to do that in any of them? A Oh, yes, very often; very often we had to line them down, and then sometimes get in them and run a little ways, and then go on with the lining down; sometimes have to take the cargo out and carry the cargo for some yards, one hundred yards, perhaps a quarter of a mile, then load up and go on again, -- in various ways. Q Did your expedition lose any boats in Cataract? A No. Q After you came through the cataracts, and Narrow canyon, into Glen canyon, just describe the progress. A BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Before you get out of that, how many rapids did you have to make portage, do you remember, in Cataract canyon? A I don't remember, but it was a great many, great many rapids; the rapids are almost continuous. Q Did you haul the boats over the land on the banks, or did you line them mostly? A Both ways.
