Q From these high points could you view that section of country which lies in the Colorado river basin? A Yes, from the very high cliffs you can, looking back. Q What was the character of that country? A It is a mass of cliffs and canyons, and very difficult to traverse. For instance, the Kanab canyon cuts back so far into the country that you can't travel within fifty miles of the Grand Canyon. Q Were there any towns between Kanab and the place where you got on the railroad, that you passed through? A Oh, yes, Mormon settlements all the way down after we struck Asa ranch, Panguitch, Marysvale, Manti, Lehi, York I think, finally Salt Lake. Q When you were with Major Powell going down the river at any points did you get out of the canyons? A Yes, we climbed out frequently doing topographical work and geological examination. The contract -- at least, the directions from the government called for an examination for at least twelve miles on each side of the river. Q Was approximately that distance covered? A Yes. |
