Show 3515 1537 26 Dellenbaugh- D BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Have you any recollection as to the movement of the boats through that particular place? A Oh, yes; they would run -- as we went along they would run on these ledges of shale and refuse to go on, so we had to get out of the boats and walk alongside, and as the shale dropped off very suddenly at the end of these tilted ledges, one went down sometimes over his head very suddenly; then we would get in the boats again and go on until we were obstructed in the some way a little further down. We had some miles of that. Q Have you any recollection of passing the mouth of the San Juan river? A Oh, yes; I passed it twice, you see. Q Can you give us any idea of the width of the river at the time you passed it, and also the approximate dates when you passed it? A The first time we passed it was about the middle of October. Q That is 1871? A 1871; the San Juan was rather low, like the Colorado, at that time; I should say it wasn't more than twenty or thirty feet wide, as I recollect it. The second time I went down, the river was exceedingly high; it was filled from wall to wall; with a terrific current, so swift we found difficulty in stopping; and the San Juan at that time was of course backed up more or less by the Colorado |
