Show 3529 1551 40 Dellenbaugh- D Then easterly there was a place called Pipe spring, which has since been made into a natural monument. Q Where is Pipe spring with reference to Kanab? A Twenty miles east of Kanab. Q How large a town was it at that time? A Wasn't any town at all; it was a place a man named Windsor had built and sort of fortified to protect people that were traveling. It was a double house, made of strong sandstone, two stories high, each one, with a court in between, protected by very large, heavy doors, and the outside of the house had nothing but loop holes. A spring was conducted in from a bank nearby, under-ground and through the house, so they never could be starved out for want of water. Q The second time you brought this boat down through Glen canyon to Lee's Ferry, did you encounter any difficulty in the operation of the boat? A Only the difficulty of stopping. The river was very high; it was phenominally high; our only difficulty was in stopping. We went along beautifully, on this smooth swift current, and when we wanted to stop, it was almost impossible, because there was nothing to get hold of anywhere, except occasionally a bank with some bushes on it, any we grabbed the bushes, and almost pulled the boat underwater in trying to stop. |
