A No, they were a tribe called by the Piutes Shinumos. That is where we got the name. They were the previous Indians that occupied that territory, the cliff- dwellers, so- called cliff- dwellers. Q And a race which was extinct at the time you were down there? A We can not tell exactly about that; they may exist in some of the tribes today, some of them. The Hopis are still cliff- dwellers; they live up on top of the mesas, simply defensive. The fact that people lived in those cliffs did not indicate they were a different tribe from the other Indians, simply that they had chosen those places for defense.
