Show 3695 Clark- D 1717 Q Did your party follow the plan of running these rapids stern foremost? A Yes sir. Q Through Cataract canyon was that the universal custom? A Yes sir. Q Did you run any of the boats through there with the bow foremost? A There was one rapid that I went part way through with the bow foremost. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Did these boats have rudders? A No sir. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Bringing the boats through did you have more than one oarasman in a boat to bring them through the cataract? A No sir, just one oarsman to each boat. Q From then on down to the end of the cataracts, to Lees Ferry, just describe the progress of this expedition. A From the cataracts down to Lees Ferry the difficulties we had was running on bars, that is, gravel bars where the water was shallow so the boats would drag, and one or two of the boats hung up so the man had to get out and push them off; and then they had difficulties there with what they call whirlpools that catches your boat and turns it on you, and lots of times holds it there so it is quite a difficulty to get your boat out of there, out of these whirlpools. |
