Q In all of your investigations of the Indians and their lives and habits out there, did you discover any evidence of their having owned or possessed or operated boats? A No. Q Have you also studied other American Indians? A Yes. Q What is the situation with reference to other Indians as to the ownership and operation of boats? THE SPECIAL MASTER; How is that pertinent, Mr. Blackmar? MR. BLACKMAR: Except for this reason, I think it is true in this country wherever rivers are subject to naviga-tion that they are so used by the Indians. THE SPECIAL MASTER: He has testified as far as he knows the west Indians did not use boats; therefore they, of course, would not go on the rivers in boats. I do not see how, so far as this particular river is concerned, it makes any difference what the Iriquois did in New York. I think his testimony that is already in covers the situation so far as this river is concerned. I think the court will take judicial notice of the fact the Indians used the eastern rivers. BY MR.
