Show 3544 1566 55 Dellenbaugh- D A There was a man named Hook from Cheyenne; he tried to follow Powell; he was wrecked in Red canyon, drowned there; and the there is the name Julian inscribed in several places in Labyrinth canyon, one place in Cataract, but nobody knows who he was, or whether he was on the river or not. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q How do you mean, inscribed? A Cut into the rock. Q Up how far? A It occur three four places -- two or three places in Laby-rinth canyon, one place in Cataract canyon. Q Did you see it on your first trip down? A I didn't see it at all; it wasn't discovered by our party, but by Stanton, first, twenty years later. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Have you ever seen these inscriptions yourself? A No. Q Have you made any effort to find out who this man Julian was? A Yes, I have made a very determined effort to find out who he was. I had at one time a great deal of correspondence with Canadian archives, every place I could think of. I haven't been able to find out anything about Julian. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Stanton went down in 1889? A Yes, 1889 and 1890. Q You don't know whether this inscription was made in between the |
