Show 3694 Clark- D 1716 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q After you would run through one rapid, would you go right on through, or would you pull ashore, or how would you do? A We would pull ashore. Q What is it? A We would pull ashore. Q What was the purpose of pulling ashore? A To stand by for the next boat coming through, in case he had an accident; used to lie there; all boats wouldn't pull ashore; always had one boat out in case of an accident, so he could pick the man up, in case he had to. Of course, the first boat going through didn't have that protection. Q Was your party equipped with life preservers? A Yes sir. Q At what point did you stop to repair these boats? A It was in Cataract canyon, about, I should say, the first one we repaired was about on the 7th rapid; the second one was about,-- as I remember, was about the 8th or 10th rapid. Q To what extent were these boats injured? A The bottom was pushed in, that is, a space of about six inches, the board was sprung in, and broken, so we had to bring it out on the shore and take the cargo out of it and patch it with a board, and we had a special preparation of cement we used to put over it. |
