A You mean where his position was? Yes, he sat on the middle cabin of our boat, in an arm chair, which was strapped on, so he could see ahead and give orders accordingly, as to which oars we should pull to get the boat into any particular posi-tion. Q The photographs contained in these two books of yours, Exhibits 13 and 14, which are credited to a man named Beman, were they taken on this expedition? A Yes, Beman was our photographer the first season. Q Did you know Robert Brewster Stanton in his lifetime? A Very well. Q Who was Mr. Stanton? A Mr. Stanton was a mining engineer. Q Was he a man of some professional attainments? A Yes, in his profession he was quite eminent, had done a lot of mining work and all kinds of survey work, estimates on mines, things of that sort. Q Do you know where the field notes which Mr. Stanton kept of his trip down the Colorado river, and his survey of that rail-road down the canyons, where they are? A Yes, they are in the New York Public library, Manuscript Department. |
