Show 3559 1581 70 Dellenbaugh- C Labyrinth canyon? A The first time I went there? Q I am talking about the first time. A We found there is a rapid just below the mouth of the San Juan that is quite a lively rapid. Q I am talking about sandbars or impediments of that kind. A No, I don't remember any sandbars below, about say fifteen or twenty miles below the Dirty Devil. Q The only thing you observed on that stretch of the river from the foot of Cataract canyon down to the Utah- Arizona state line that created anything approaching obstacles as you found on the Green river in Labyrinth canyon was this rapids you speak of? A That rapid and the shoals above, the sandstone ledges I speak of, and some sandbars. Q Those sandstone ledges or shoals, I think you said they were shale? A They were sandstone shales, as I remember it. Q In going down through that section where you say you encountered this shale, you merely let your boat go straight down the river, didn't you? A Yes, we went down the river as any boat would go down. Q You didn't waste any time trying to pick out any particular point in the river for your boat to travel along? A I don't remember any now. |
