Show 3541 1563 52 Dellenbaugh-/ D Q You spoke of Jedediah Smith. What connection did he have? A Jedediah Smith was the first Mormon to come through to southern California, in 1827. He made two expeditions down this way; I have forgotten whether it was 1827 or 1828, the first one. I think the first one was in 1827. He came from Salt Lake City, what is now Salt Lake City, down south past Utah lake and up the Sevier, and it is generally believed he went down the Virgin river, but he really did not; he crossed there about farowan, over to Nevada, just about where the railway now cuts the line, and hit the head of the Meador valley wash about the Muddy; he went down the Muddy instead of down the Virgin, called it Adams river. Q This man, Manly, you spoke of, did he have anything to do with this Spanish trail? A No, they were on a different trail, they were trying to get to California in 1843, and after he had made that attempt to go down Green river, be joined a party to go to California, and they went by the southern route, as it was called. Q Whereabouts did he get on the Green river, and where did he leave it? A He got on the Green river at what is now Green River station, Wyoming, and he left it at the Uintah valley; he got down there where they had an old flat boat; they started with an old ferry boat; it is phenomenal that they really got through; there were two other fellows with him, I think.
