Show 3539 1561 50 Dellenbaugh- D you sketched that in? A Largely from Escalante's diary of that trip. Q They have a copy in the Congressional Library in Washington, and it also exists -- published in Mexico -- history of Mexico, a number of volumes they published down there; it was translated in Harris' Catholic Church in Utah, a fairly good translation; I had translation made myself, also. Q In your investigation of Escalante's expedition did you find at any place that Escalante used boats? A No. Q Have you made any investigation of that highway which is known as the Spanish trail? A Yes. Q And from was source did you derive that information? A That has to be picked out from a great many different sources, a paragraph here and a paragraph there. Chittenden gives a brief description of it, and there is a man named Brewerton who wrote in Harper's Magazine of about 1853. I think it was; with Kit Carson he came over the Spanish trail. He describes the trail very poorly, but you can follow it. I went over the trail myself four times, at least a large part of it. Q Mr. Dellenbaugh, are you able to tell us now the Spanish trail was established, and the purpose of it? |
