A The country to the right or south is a terrible country, terri-ble mixture of canyons as cliffs; it is very difficult to traverse; I suppose it is easier now, because trails have been worked out. On the left is what we call Aquarius plateau, a high plateau covered with lakes and brooks; a very beautiful country; had plenty of grass and everything for horses, until we got to the end of that. When we got to the eastern end of Aquarius plateau, we had to descend into this canyon region; we had a great deal of difficulty getting across that, because we misunderstood some Indians we met; they wouldn't go with us, but they gave us directions. We misunderstood the directions, and we got terribly tangled up in that maze canyons. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q About how many miles is it from Kanab overland to Lee's Ferry? A Well, it is a little less than one hundred miles, I should say. Q How far from Kanab to the mouth of the Dirty Devil? A You mean overland? Q Overland.
