Show 3524 1546 Dellenbaugh- D 35 We camped there, waited for Powell to come from Salt Lake, and plan the winter work. We got over to Kanab about the first of November, I should say, 1871. Q Tell me about work of that party from the date you arrived in Kanab through that winter. A We had pack trains, and went out around the surrounding country, at about what we calls it. Trumble afterwards, and over on the Kaibab, and the country back of Kanab, and all around, establishing geodetic points and running a base line from Kanab out nine miles long, and triangulating from that base line in order to get a base triangulating in there for laying out the maps, and also did a lot of recording of the topography, running in trails, things of that sort. We were busy the whole winter. Q At the conclusion of the winter did you again return to the Colorado river? A Yes, we went -- the first time was when we tried to go out and find the mouth of the Devil across country. That was a very difficult operation. We finally got there, and I brought down that boat we left behind the year before. Q You went from Kanab to the mouth of the Dirty Devil? A Yes. Q Just tell me how you went. |
