BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q This Crossing of the Fathers, when did you know of that name? A We knew of that name when we started, because it had been known for years; Escalante crossed there in 1776. Q It was an historic place? A Yes sir. It was called the Crossing of the Fathers because he crossed there. Q So when you came down the river you were on the lookout for a place of that nature? A Yes. Jacob Hamblin, of southern Utah, who was the Indian agent of the Mormon church for southern Utah, had crossed there four or five times, the first time in 1858. We knew perfectly about it. It is a very difficult crossing, by the way. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Between Gunnison Crossing and Lee's Ferry was your expedition re- supplied at any point? A No, not until we got to the Crossing of the Fathers, as I told you before, as Jacob Hamblin couldn't find the mouth of the Dirty Devil, at least he couldn't get there, -- he was on the wrong stream entirely; we had to run past the Dirty Devil on |
