Q Right about that point Major Powell fixed a place he called Monument. Do you recall that place? A We divided, at first, Glen canyon into two canyons. One was called Monument canyon, the other was called Glen canyon; later on it was decided we would give only the one name to it, Glen canyon, to the whole thing, That was the only Monument I know anything about. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q These canyons were named by Major Powell, were they? A Yes. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Through Glen canyon did you run on to any sandbars in there that you recall? A I don't remember sandbars; we ran onto those ledges; there were a number of those; I think there were some sandbars, too, but I don't remember clearly about that; the ledges and some small rapids were the worst difficulty; some of the rapids were full of rocks, of course the river being low we had to go with great caution there.
