Show 1527 16 3505 Dellenbaugh- D BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you experience any trouble with grounding or sandbars between Gunnison Crossing and the mouth of the San Rafael? A As I remember it, we didn't have any every serious trouble with grounding. Q In that stretch of the river did you meet any boats or any other people outside of the Hamblins? A No. Q Just tell me about the progress of this expedition from the mouth of the San Rafael through Labyrinth canyon down to the end of Labyrinth canyon. A Just below the SanRafael you come to -- let's see -- you come to Labyrinth canyon, and following that is Stillwater canyon, and both of those canyons are comparatively free from rocks; we had trouble with grounding in Stillwater canyon on the sandbars, but not in Labyrinth canyon - I mean, we had trouble in grounding on the sandbard, but not in Stillwater canyon; the river was narrow there, and we went on without much trouble, Did you ask me bout Desolation canyon? Q No. A Desolation coles just above Gunnison. Q What method did you adopt of getting off of these sandbars? A We got off and waded along, sometimes waded for considerable distances, lift the boats along, case them up. Q How many of your party had been on the Powell first expedition? A None except Major Powell himself. |
