Show 3678 Hyde- D 1700 A Yes sir. Q What about the winter there, -- does it ever get so cold the San Juan freezes over? A Yes, I have seen the San Juan froze ten or twelve inches of ice in places where there was water enough to freeze it that deep. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q What does it normally do? A Well, I'll tell you,-- doesn't seem to be any normality there; some years it will freeze, as I say, a foot thick, ten inches; other years it will just run mush ice, floating fine ice down the river. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Is the freezing to a thickness of ten or twelve inches, is that an unusual occurrence in winter? A That is unusual, yes. Q The usual occurrence is the mush ice? A Yes sir. Q Did you ever get enough ice in there that caused ice gorges on the San Juan? A I have seen ice gorges down between the mouth of Lime creek and Goodrich, where it would crush up and back the water up fifteen or twenty feet high, and throw the ice clear out on to the banks on either side, slabs of ice. Q Have you ever seen the San Juan river completely dry? |
