The males have the bill black, with a red patch on the sides of the culmen and base of the lower mandible, also a patch of scarlet on the sides of the body, of much less extent than in E. atricapilla. It is the Habropyga tenerrima of Reichenow. The female differs in having the entire bill dusky black and no red on the sides of the body. This is the Astrilda nonnula, Hartl. 73.
