Show 555 I wondered. How long before Ed discovered the holes, the wounds that didn't show? It didn't take long, perhaps because Ed bore similar b a t t l e - scars. His i n t e r e s t quickly was t r a n s l a t e d from Brian to me. "How'd you ever land something l i k e t h i s , man?" he teased Brian. "The l a d y ' s got c l a s s ." We stayed up l a t e t a l k i n g p e r i p h e r a l l y of Vietnam and more directly about our f a i l i n g society. "The establishment's gonna crumble," Ed predicted, passing a joint to Brian. Brian nodded without expression. "My father predicted t h i s for a long time," I told them. "He's been saying a l l along t h a t we were heading for trouble becaase we've forgotten to serve the Lord f i r s t and ourselves second." The two men looked at me and said nothing. After awhile, a long while of tokes and staring into space, Sd said, "What I ' v e got in mind i s to buy some land in the country. Buy a cow, some seeds , some equipment. We oughta do it together, man. We always got on." But he was looking at me. "Yeh',' Brian said. "After you get yourself a woman. You'd have a to have a woman, way out there in the country." "What about her?" Ed grinned at me. "You woman enough f°r both of us?" I blushed, but revelled in the a t t e n t i o n. "Really," Sd went on. "People are t r y i n g out a l l different ffays of l i v i n g ~ communes, group marriages. They know we gotta stick together. We could gather some people around us, hand-pick them, you know?" |
