Show XIV He became a shaman regarded as sole physical and spiritual heal~er by thousands of fundamentalist Mormons. Many reeled with shock when this man so venerated was gunned down in his doctor's office in 1977. It could only have happened in Utah --in Salt Lake City, where --- life revolves around religion. Young lives are marked by baptisms, patriarchal blessings, seminary graduations, priesthood appointments, temple endowments and missions. Mature lives are gauged successful according to upward movement in the Mormon Church hierarchy. The religion is so pervasive that it dominates social life and career options. -=--c - t r r e^ T-n- _t £.__£ . : For the especially devout Latter-day Saint, Mormonism is a total way of life and he wants no more from the world than to spend his life in Zion's tight circle, beneath the auspicious light of the Church. Salt Lake City is a place where^ people habitually sacrifice in the name of God. But a clear-eyed look at the way of life opens another perspective.
