Show in my father's house/ 72 that her parents wouldn't get suspicious, but by nature Sarah's family repelled lies and deception. Soon the truth came bursting out. Her mother wept. Her father roared and paced the room. Her parents took her to Salt Lake City so that Church authorities could "bring her to her senses." The appointment with a high-ranking Church official was aborted; no one knew why the Apostle was absent that day. Sarah saw it as the hand of God; her parents saw it as the work of Satan. They allowed her to visit her sister-wives for half an hour while they waited in the car. When the thirty minutes were gone, Grandmother Allred followed Sarah to the front door and gave her a reassuring hug. "Oh, Mother Allred, what shall I do?" Sarah choked. Grandmother stepped back and looked into her eyes. "Don't worry. The Lord's hand is in this, as in all things. He will open the way." Then Sarah was whisked back to Tremonton. Some weeks later, she bicycled off to the grocery store, ostensibly to buy some baking soda. She met my father by the delivery door and left Tremonton for good. Brother Miles followed them to Salt Lake and spread word that if he found his new son-in-law, he'd hang him up by his heels. Some distorted the message into a literal hanging, while others rumored that FBI and local police trailed my father. "You'd better stay off the streets for a month or so," |
