Show Blake- D 923 watch against a rise in the river which might carry our boats into an unfavorable location or might submerge our camp. Then there was another difficulty, of a sudden drop in the river, which at times would leave our boats -- or start to leave our boats high and dry before we could move them. At one time we barely got the boats out before they would have been land- looked, with a wide mud flat between us and the river. Q By that you mean that the river started to drop rapidly? A Yes sir. Q While you were in camp? A Yes sir. Q And when that started you had to quickly get your boats out? Yes sir, to keep from getting stuck on the dry land. There was one other feature which is somewhat of a menace, that is the flow of driftwood in the river, to motor boats; that might have been very serious to our boat; it was just a minor problem, but there are at times and was at times quite a bit of drift floating; we have to dodge these logs, branches and sticks so they will not stick on the how of the boat or ram into the boat. That is one of the minor difficulties. Our greatest difficulty seemed to be sticking on sandbars. 2893 |
