Show Kolb- D 821 left on September 11th. They wanted to climb out at the junction. We didn't leave until the next morning, because some of the party had not arrived by train. My brother and his assistant went ahead, in order to make certain pictures, so it left two boats. One of these was the small boat that I mentioned; the other was one of the larger boats. We did not attach the motor directly at Greeriver, this out- boat motor. Q Why not? A There was some lively water that gave evidence of having rocks close to the surface, just below Greenriver, Utah. The out- board motor would stick into the water about eighteen inches, and it was arranged so that it would work up on a hinge in case it struck rocks, but still , we didn't want to risk it. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q EIGHteen inches in depth? A Yes sir, much lower than boat, and we had found it wouldn't work unless it did have that depth; but about half a mile below Greenriver we did attach this motor to the boat, and we attempted to fasten the other boat first in tandem style to this motor- propelled boat, and it didn't work very well; it would swing from side to side, and we couldn't steer it. Then some one suggested that we attach it to the side, which we did, and that scheme worked very well. It was fastened quite firmly with ropes right beside the power 2791 |
