Show Kolb- D 822 boat, and we proceeded down the river in that way. We had some trouble scraping rocks in quick water or lively water below this rapid that I mentioned, directly below Greenriver; two or three times the boat ran into rocks, would stick there; the bow would run up on the rocks and would hold us a while, and we would swing around, the current would carry the stern around. That happened many times on all trips, and we didn't think anything of it, because that was just incidental to the work. It wouldn't smash the boat; it wore the bottom, and on our first trip, as well as the second trip, we put oak strips on the bottom, to prevent that extra rubbing from that reason. Most of our trouble or incidental work on the river for twenty miles, approximately twenty miles, was occasional shallow places in the stream, not sandbars, but gravel, with an occasional larger rock, and we would have to manouver to avoid those rocks. But we made very good time with that motor, that but- board motor, that day. Q How far did you get that day? A Yesterday I was asked about the location of the San Rafael. I noticed in my note that I had located the Wolverton ranch a short distance below the San Rafael; we passed the San Rafael on this second trip -- they are written in pencil, and they got wet, so they are not very legible. 2792 |
