Show Kolb- D 830 Q He had one of the boats you had used before? A On our first trip. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q How did you get that boat up to Greenriver, Utah? A He had stored that boat in Los Angeles. Q Came in on the railroad? A Yes sir. Q Did you find the water in Cataract canyon to be in the same condition as you found it in 1911? A In nearly all places it was almost the same stage of water; it might have been six inches higher when we started. The river was falling; we could see that as we came down; it would fall, and we would overtake a part of that high water in the day's run, and then it would fall over night again; there would be evidence along the shores so we could get an idea that the river was going down. Some of the rapids had different channels, that is, there wouldn't be as much water on one side as there was on the other, but the silt does not collect in those canyons where the rapids are. Coarse sand will collect. And we didn't find quicksand in the canyons where these rapids are. Q Did you find the same number of rapids? A They changed very little. We could take Dellenbaugh's book and we could tell almost exactly where we were going to find rapids the next day ahead. 2800 |
