We never used them in that respect; we used them only to locate our chaps and prominent land marks which we expected to reach ahead of us, to get a knowledge of the country that was ahead, before we reached it, because we didn't know the country. So you never used maps for the purpose of operating the boats? No sir; we got our information in that respect, concerning rapids, from Dellenbaugh's book. Is your answer the same on the stretch between the end of Cataract canyon and Lee's Ferry? Yes sir. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: If you had had those detailed maps issued by the Topographic survey, would they or would they not have been of any assistance to you?
