Show Blake- D 890 A At one place that I recall we did so, besides the place we portaged the boats. On that last stretch of the river we struck many sandbars, as I remember, too. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q These places where you had rapids that you went through rather than make portage, what was the character of the sides of the stream there, was it rock canyon straight up, or were there banks of gravel or sand? A For the most part the river bed extends to the foot of the talus slope. This talus is strewn in a great many cases with huge boulders, interspersed with clay or the finer debris; in some places the river reached from one sheer wall to the other. In these places, however, we did not, as I remember, encounter any serious rapids. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q From the time you entered the river there below Bluff until you reached the Colorado river, did you see any other boats on the San Juan? A I think not.
