Show Kolb- D 868 Q That boat appears in this picture to be hitting that, broadside. A That frequently happened, and sometimes it was done purposely, and sometimes on account of the great weight of this survey party on this trip we weren't able to handle it as we wanted to. THE SPECIAL MASTER: Can not always do that on salt water. A But frequently we are trying to pull away from a dangerous point where we have the boat quartered. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Exhibit 107. A That was a rapid quite similar to Dark canyon rapid in its shape, is swinging against the bank, first one bank and then the other, about a mile above Dark canyon. No big waves, but very swift water. And the only danger would be to get the boat against the rocks at the turn. Q Exhibit 108? A That was interesting to us because it showed you the driftwood and the river in high water, and it is in the vicinity of rapid No. 13 -- No. 12 or 13, in Cataract canyon. Q Exhibit 109? A One rapid, No. 21, in Cataract canyon; there are three rapids there very close together, very swift water; high water would make these rapids continuous. Q No. 110. 2838 |
