Show Kolb- D 836 we overturned; we had life- lines around all boats; we had drilled ourselves in it; when a boat overturned we always caught the lifeline; as we went over, I held, and the boat drifted into quieter water; some of the men on shore down, threw a life line to me; I was pulled to the shore. I made a third attempt with the next boat, overturned with that, and the men had this other boat empty, and out and pulled me ashore. All three boats were at the end of the rapid; none of them were broken. We advised my brother to line his boat, and that was done; he didn't attempt to run his boat. With three upsets, three boats, we got through. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q What was the character of the shore around those rapids? A Of the right shore? Q I mean around this particular rapid. A On the right shore the banes came very close to the rapid, and then there was a steep talus slope of rock that came right down into the water. On the south shore -- on the left shore, there was quite a wide sandbar -- gravel bar and rocks mixed in with it. It was muddy from high water, silt in it, that a person steers into very easily; it is nasty stuff to get through; you sink in it to your ankles, on account of its 2806 |
