BLACKMAR: Q Just tell me quickly and briefly the trouble which you had, if any, through Red canyon. A Through Red canyon we encountered fairly low water, with numerous projecting rocks in the upper end. These rocks were sometime unavoidable, and our boats would scrape or bump them. In one instance one of the boats ran upon a rock in the upper reaches of the canyon; further down the other boat ran upon a rock, and had to be pulled off by the boat which was up river and came past, allowing the boatman of the stranded craft to jump down on to the deck, taking a half- hitch or a turn around the hatch cover, and the weight of the moving boat dragged the stranded craft off of the rock. Then, at Ashley falls, we were cautious about looking over the rapid before running; we didn't have any accident, however, running the falls. Proceeding on to Red Creek rapid, we had here also 2871 |
