Then, from this narrow, swift riffle to the Booth place was swift water, but not specially shallow. At the Booth place water is divided by an island. We tried the right channel -- right- hand channel, but found there was not a possible chance of getting a boat up. Then we discovered the left- hand channel, which looked to be a lagoon from the other side of the river. We proceeded up the east channel until the eater became swift and the propeller struck bottom, and we decided to abandon our trip up the river there, on account of being afraid of wrecking our propeller; we returned to Greenriver city, and encountered shallow water, and crossing the first crossing bar above the bridge was difficult to cross. Q Mr. Blake, what is meant by the expression, " crossing- bar"? A I think that was coined by some of the Geological Survey; to me it seems apt. The bars start at the widest point on the inside of the curve of the river; the water here is slow; the outside of the curve, the water is always fast; and in this slow water the sediment is deepest, and as the river proceeds around the curve it starts in to the opposite 2879 |
