Show Kolb- D 831 Q Did you see Dellenbaugh's book on this trip? A No, we didn't; we had been through; we used our own notes. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q You had your notes with you, I suppose? A Yes sir. Q I suppose that is the way in which you made comparisons? A That is the way in which we made comparisons. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you run these rapids with the boats light? A In a few of the upper rapids we had so much stuff it couldn't all go under the decks, and the open compartments that were supposed to be for the oarsman alone, we had a lot of stuff in there, and some of the men helped to carry a certain amount of stuff -- that stuff that was in the open -- would carry that around some of the rapids. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Did you follow that same method on the first trip? A Yes, we did that in many cases; we would take two- thirds of the stuff out of the boats and carry it around to make the boats easier to handle, and to make them so we would have the stuff saved in case we lost the boats; that was always in our minds in these rapids. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Was it necessary on either one of these trips to line the boats through Cataract canyon? A There are lots of rapids where it would be good judgment to 2801 |
