Show Kolb- D 840 ran that rapid; I think we let Mr. List, who had done considerable boating on the Salmon river, handle one of the boats. It is possible Tasker took one of the boats through that rapid. Q After you came out of Narrow canyon, just describe your trip from there on down to the mouth of the San Juan. A We stopped at -- the engineers still continued their work through that section --- we stopped at the John Hite ranch; there was no one there when we first got there, but four men came in, cattle men, before we left. Q Where is the John Hite ranch located? A I think it is eight miles below the Freemont, or Dirty Devil river, on the right side, or the north. Q Did these four men live there? A One man was living there; he ranged cattle out from that section; these other men were cattle men, and they seemed to be there -- they were trying to organize in some way, or get some understanding about ranging cattle, and they were from far- distant places, each of them in different parts of the river or different directions from the river. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Were they on the river bank, or up on the upland? A There are bottoms there; they were on the bottoms about ten feet above the river, very close to the river. Q Was there a road or trail leading up? 2810 |
