Show Blake- D 887 split from stem to stern, just below the water line, due to faulty construction of the boat; the ribs of the boat on the side were not nailed to the ribs of the boat on the bottom. We stopped and repaired the boat at this point. Then I operated the boat in crossing at different intervals. At one place Mr. Gerdine, of the Geological Survey, and Mr. Shenk, of the Southern California Edison Company, came in at a place I believe not far below Piute Farms, and I think above Clay gulch, or near Clay gulch, possibly at the mouth. I operated the boat at that place, in carrying one of these men across, and at this place there were heavy sand waves. Q How high? A They were, Oh, possibly three or four feet high, but they were numerous for a long stretch, which reminds me, I had rode the boat through this stretch from Piute Farms to, I think, Clay gulch. A Then, somewhere near the canyon, mouth of Piute creek, I took the boat through rapids there, went through what was known as rapids; it was rather swift water, and small rapids, at least, Piute creek or canyon.
